Last Sunday, we saw the ultimate showdown between two amazing teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. I gave some background and predictions about these two teams in my newsletter last week. (See below for details on winner of Super Bowl LVII Picks). If you didn’t catch the game or just want a recap of what happened, I have written a comprehensive summary below:
1st Quarter:Some football games start slow with a three-and-out situation, but Philadelphia’s first drive was far from that. After a few small plays and runs, we saw Jalen Hurts throw to DeVonta Smith for 23 yards, which put them in the red zone and in good scoring position. A few plays later, Jalen Hurts rushed up the middle for 1 yard to secure the touchdown! (0-7) Right off the bat, the Chiefs were on fire. The Chiefs drive was only 6 plays, including a Travis Kelce completion for 20 yards, Isiah Pacheco run for 24 yards, and Patrick Mahomes pass to Travis Kelce for the end zone to tie it up! (7-7) The next drive wasn’t eventful, as the Eagles got 3-and-out and immediately punted the ball back to the Chiefs. The Chiefs drive wasn’t too much better. A few short runs, a throw to Kelce (again) for 22 yards, and a missed 42-yard field goal by Harrison Butker concluded that drive. With 2:24 left in the first, the Eagles did a few short runs and passes, ending the first.
2nd Quarter: Very first play of the 2nd quarter, Jalen Hurts throws it to A.J. Brown for a 45-yard TD!!! (7-14) Eagles back in possession, after an unsuccessful drive by KC, slowly progress down the field until… Jalen Hurts fumbles! This fumble is picked up by Chiefs’ Nick Bolton and run into the end zone for the touchdown! (14-14) With 9:39 left before the half, the Eagles take their sweet time on the drive. A few short runs and passes, until they are presented with 4th and 5 where Jalen Hurts rushed up the middle for a 28 yard gain, taking them to the 16 yard line! Not much later, Jalen Hurts runs for 4 yards into the end zone for his 2nd TD of the game! (14-21) The Chiefs’ drive was again a bust, including some incomplete passes, a false start, and a fumble which was recovered. They punted the ball back to the Eagles with just 1:33 remaining. Time ticking, the Eagles manage to get it to the Chiefs 17-yard line and allow Jake Elliot to complete the 35-yard field goal, sending it to halftime. (14-24)
3rd Quarter: After the halftime show performance by Rihanna (which I didn’t watch), we are back to the game, with Chiefs receiving the ball. The Chiefs progressively moved down the field with some great runs, short passes, and a 14-yard scramble by Patrick Mahomes. The drive ended with a 1 yard touchdown by Isiah Pacheco! (21-24) The Eagles’ 9-min drive consumed the rest of the half. Dallas Goedert did exceptionally well during this drive, bringing in two 17-yard passes from Jalen Hurts. The drive ended with a 4th and 6 situation, where Jake Elliot kicked a 33-yard field goal with 1:48 left in the third quarter! (21-27) The Chiefs managed to gain 31 yards and get to their own 45 before the end of the third.
4th Quarter: Patrick Mahomes seemed to favor JuJu Smith-Schuster for this quarter, as all 3 of the first plays of the quarter were to him, bringing in a total of 30 yards! After a Jerrick McKinnon run, Patrick Mahomes threw it to Kadarius Toney for the TD and the lead with a full 12:08 left in regulation! (28-27) Well, the Eagles’ next drive stunk, leaving them with a 4th and 3 situation and a punt that went very well for the Chiefs. Kadarius Toney returned this punt FOR 65 YARDS, putting the Chiefs at the 5-yard line! Two plays later, Patrick Mahomes passed left for a 4-yard touchdown, increasing their lead! (35-27) The Eagles’ next drive started off slow, but it didn’t finish that way! 3rd and 5 with 6 min left to go, Jalen Hurts chucked it down to DeVonta Smith for 45 yards! The next play saw Jalen Hurts running for a 2-yard touchdown, and running it in for the 2-point conversion, which tied the game at 5:20 left in the game! (35-35) Now, all the Chiefs had to do was run down the clock and score right at the end, no mistakes allowed! They did some pretty good passes, as well as a Patrick Mahomes’ 26 yard scramble which placed them at the 17-yard line with 2:07 left on the game clock! The Chiefs end up getting 3rd and 8 and NOT making it, BUT there was a very controversial holding on the play which gave KC the first down at the 10! Kansas City then ran down the clock, and Harrison Butker kicked the 27-yard field goal to take back the lead with just 0:11 left! (38-35) The final play showed Jalen Hurts throwing the ball to the middle of the field, ending the game! Final Score: 38-35 KC!!!
So, the Chiefs win their 3rd Super Bowl (1970, 2020, and 2023) and Patrick Mahomes gets his second Super Bowl ring! Also, I got it right that the Chiefs would win! Speaking of which, I have attached the picks sheet with all the correct answers below! See how many points you got, and post your score in the comments!
